The Effect of Smoking and Alochol Intake on Routine Laboratory Tests in Male White Collar Workers

Cho Won-Il
Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of smoking and alcohol intake of 1,135 male white collor workers were explored by questionnaire. And various laboratory tests, hematologic test such as hemoglobin, hematocrit and leukocyte count,
liver
function tests such as total protein, SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and r-GTP, creatinine, blood glucose, uric acid, and blood lipids such as choleterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, were measured. The associated
between
smoking habit and alcohol intake and laboratory tests were analysed using SAS package program
@ES The results obtained were as follows:
@EN 1. The rates of smokers and drinkers of subjects were 62.6% and 73.1%, respectively. Increasing the age, the rates of smoking and drinking were significantly decreased.
2. On the hematologic findings, smoking was significantly associated with higher hemoglobin, hematocrit and leucocyte, and alcohol intake was significantly associated with higher hemoglobin and hematocrit.
3. On the liver function tests, smoking was significantly associated with lower total protein, bilirubin, and highter r-GTP, and increasing the sum of alcohol intake, SGOT, SGPT, total bilirubin and ¥ã-GTP were significantly increased.
4. Alcohol intake has negative association with creatinine.
5. Increasing the age, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly increased. Smoking was significantly associated with higher cholesterol and triglyceride, lower high-density lipoprotein, and alcohol intake was significantly
associated with higher blood glucose, uric acid, cholesterol and high-density lipoprotien and triglyceride.
In conculsion, it was suggested that smoking and alcohol intake were associated with the routine laboratory tests such as hematologic tests, liver function tests, blood glucose, uric acid, and blood lipids. Therefore, it was desirable to consider
the
effect of smoking and alcohol intake when interprting the laboratory resulte or health examination and recommending after the results.
